Q. / Why is Tonnino packed in glass jars?
A. / Because the glass jar contains only whole fillets, which are superior in quality and taste. Also, the product is hand packed and the appearance of the tuna is much more appetizing. Moreover, tuna packed in glass jars tends to have a better flavor than tuna packed in tins.

Q. / What are Ventrescas?
A. / Ventresca or belly is the most tender and delicate part of the Tuna. It is different because its characteristic flavour makes it an exquisite delicacy. It is obtained cutting the piece that is comprised of the ventral fin up to the beginning of the head of the tuna, formed by overlapping layers.

Q. / What is Omega-3?
A. / Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids that occur predominantly in deep-sea saltwater fish. Omega-3 fatty acids provide a broad array of cardiovascular benefits. Omega-3s benefit the cardiovascular system by helping to prevent erratic heart rhythms, making blood less likely to clot inside arteries (which is the ultimate cause of most heart attacks), and improving the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to potentially harmful (LDL) cholesterol. And, as mentioned above, omega-3s reduce inflammation, which is a key component in the processes that turn cholesterol into artery-clogging plaques.

Q. / What are the benefits of eating tuna?
A. / Tuna is an excellent source of high quality protein, rich in a variety of important nutrients including minerals such as selenium, magnesium, and potassium; the B vitamins niacin, B1 and B6; and perhaps most important, the beneficial omega-3 essential fatty acids. These essential fatty acids are vital for human health but cannot be produced by the human body; they must therefore be obtained from foods. Cold-water fish like tuna is a rich source of the omega-3 essential fats, a form of necessary fatty acids in which the standard American diet is sorely deficient.

Q. / Is there mercury in Tonnino tuna?
A. / Almost all ocean fish and seafood naturally contain minimal amounts of methyl mercury, due in part to underwater volcanic activity. But the amount in yellowfin tuna is exceedingly low. In fact, when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued new advice about the best ways to limit methyl mercury in the diet, FDA and EPA listed light tuna as one of the commonly eaten fish that contains very low levels of mercury.

Q. / Is tuna a fish you can farm?
A. / No, it only grows wild. It lives in the open warm tropical waters of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans.

Q. / What is Tonnino’s Dolphin Safe policy?
A. / We care for Mother Nature as it is from Mother Nature that we obtain our most important raw material. We are aware of the value of our resource and also care about other species being negatively affected by tuna catches in some parts of the world. For this reason, we have made the decision that our tuna will only come from safe sources. We only buy fish from responsible boats that follow the appropriate dolphin safe measures and can guarantee through third party observers that the tuna fishing has not harmed any other species. We can proudly say that we have been a dolphin safe company for many years and that our strategy is to continue supporting such programs in order to protect marine resources.

Q. / What does dolphin safe mean?
A. / Dolphin-safe is defined by the following factors:
- Drift nets are not used.
- An observer from the National Marine Fishery Service and/or the Interamerican Tropical Tuna Commission certifies fishing vessels and trips in the Eastern Tropical Pacific.
Fishing methods considered dolphin-safe are long line, pole and line, and the purse seine method in the Eastern Tropical Pacific with certification only.
All of our tuna products on the shelf today are certifiably dolphin-safe and the labeling on our products proudly have the “dolphin-safe” indication symbol.

Q. / Are there different types of tuna?
A. / Yes, there are 5 species: bluefin, albacore, skipjack, bigeye and yellowfin tuna. Yellowfin tuna has long, fine and (of course) lemon-yellow fins. It can grow to 2.50m and weigh up to 150 kg, and lives in the tropical and equatorial parts of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans. Differentiated from other tuna by its yellow fin, its high quality meat is a light rosy color, with a firm texture and delicate flavor.

Q. / How long are canned and glass jar seafood products edible?
A. / Commercially canned and glass jar seafood may be safely stored for several years as long as the container is not bulged, damaged or leaking in any manner. A concern with prolonged periods of storage is that the product begins to lose some if its palatability. We recommend that stocks of canned or pouched goods be rotated in your normal food supply so that none is stored much longer than a year prior to consumption.

Q. / How do you store products after they are opened?
A. / After opening, any remaining product should be placed in a sealed container and immediately refrigerated. The product should be used within 3-4 days.

Q. / How can I use the tin or jar to tell if the product is in good condition?
A. / You should take the following points into account to ensure that tinned products are in perfect condition:
- Reject any tin with a convex bottom.
- Reject any tin or jar with leaks or perforations.
- When you open them, check that the appearance, color and smell of the canned/tinned product are as they should be.

Q. / How is tuna cooked?
A. / Before being tinned, tuna is steamed and then processed by hand to ensure the most immaculate cleanliness and a selection of only the finest pieces.

Q. / Can tuna be frozen?
A. / Tuna may be frozen in a freezer bag or air-tight container. We do not recommend the product be left in the can or glass jar.
